You may have noticed that I'm a bit of a fan of circle in square motifs...
If you are too, you might like this project (making this was one of my all time favourites!)...
But back to that matter at hand... below is the pattern for how to make this very versatile, "circle in a square" granny square.
I used 4ply Merino and a 4mm hook. This pattern is in UK terms...
Chain 4 and join to create a ring.
First round - dark pink yarn for my example.
Chain 3 (that counts as your first treble), chain 1 *treble 1, chain 1* 7 times into the ring and then join to the 3rd chain of your first chain 3 you made.
2nd round - change colour if you wish - I used light pink.
Slip stitch into your nearest chain space. Then chain 3, treble 2, *chain 2, treble 3 into the next space* 7 times, then chain 2 and join into the 3rd chain of the first chain 3 you made.
Now it's starting to look like a circular granny...
3rd round - change colour again if you wish -I used off-white and this is where we're going to start forming the square.
Slip stitch into your nearest chain space. Chain 3, treble 2 into this space. Then, chain 2 and treble another 3 into this same space - you're creating the first corner. Chain 1, treble 3 into the next space - you've created the first side. *Chain 1, treble 3 into the next space, chain 2, treble 3 into the same space (corner), chain 1, treble 3 into the next space* repeating this 2 more times, to complete the round, ending with chain 1 and then slip stitch to join into the 3rd chain of the first chain 3 you made.
4th round - very much like the previous round...
Slip stitch into the next corner space. Chain 3, treble 2 into this space. Then, chain 2 and treble another 3 into this same space - this is the the first corner. *Chain 1, treble 3 into the next space* twice, to form the side. *Chain 1, treble 3 into the next space, chain 2, treble 3 into the same space (corner). *Chain 1, treble 3 into the next space* twice... and repeat, all the way around until you finish with chain 1 and then slip stitch to join into the 3rd chain of the first chain 3 you made.
